A

Abnormal

Not typical, usual, or regular; unusual; irregular

Examples

  • The doctor noticed an abnormal growth on the X-ray and recommended further tests.

  • His behavior was so abnormal that even his closest friends grew concerned.

  • Abnormal weather patterns have caused flooding in regions that are usually dry.


Absorbs

Takes in or soaks up (energy, liquid, or information)

Example

  • A sponge can absorb a large amount of water.

  • Plants absorb sunlight to produce energy through photosynthesis.

  • It took her a moment to absorb the shocking news.


Accuracy

The quality of being correct or exact

Examples:

  • The scientist double-checked her data to ensure the accuracy of the results.

  • His accuracy in shooting made him the best player on the team.

  • GPS systems have greatly improved in accuracy over the years.


Accustomed

Used to something

Examples:

  • She quickly became accustomed to the cold weather after moving to Canada.

  • I'm not yet accustomed to waking up so early every day.

  • He is accustomed to speaking in public and rarely gets nervous.


Adapt

Changed from its original form.

Examples

  • You can watch the movie that was adapted from a best-selling novel.
  • You quickly adapted to your new school environment.
  • You adapted the software to work on your phone.

Adopt

1. To take and use something as your own:

Example:

  • They decided to adopt a new policy at work.

2. To legally take a child or pet into your family.

Example:

  • We adopted two children last year
  • They adopted a puppy from the shelter.

3. To accept or start to follow something.

Example:

  • She adopted a healthier lifestyle.
  • The company adopted the latest technology to improve efficiency.
